| 2003-08-06 | CS-RCS Basic | 7 | I was looking for a shell extension for RCS, and CS-RCS will do the job (install it using the personal mode and the option to store the RCS archives in the local directory), but it brings along some bloat if that's all you need. The developers have tried to extend RCS to be more like CVS with concurrent editing capabilities and a central, network accessible repository, but most all of those features aren't available in the free operating mode. Pros: compatible and interoperable with GNU RCS; shell context menus for checking out/in files; GUI diff display. Cons: in free mode, there's no way to unlock a file; slows down normal file browsing because it has to scan the directory (a pop-up dialog will appear briefly); doesn't handle Windows line endings on RCS archive files - expects them to always be in UNIX format and then performs conversion on check-out/in; the GUI diff display, which is slow, takes getting used to - normally GUI diff tools use a side-by-side format, but this one doesn't; puts an icon on the desktop that can't be removed without editing the registry; response from support is slow. |
